The pathophysiology of obesity in children with emphasis on multifactorial causes and consideration of the research into what works and what doesn’t in obesity interventions will be discussed. A humble approach to counseling families, which acknowledges the complexities and uncertainties around overweight/obesity vs emphasizing weight or BMI as the measure of success and focusing on encouraging healthy habits will be presented. The work of an organization at Zuni which does just that, engaging kids and adolescents in fun, culturally-appropriate activities for which improved health is an added benefit will be shared.
