DE0037: Diabetes Online CDE: Native American Food Culture, Traditions, and Nutrition Counseling: a look into Chippewa/Cree and Navajo Traditions
An indigenous based diet is an important part of strengthening the tie many Native people have with the wisdom of their ancestors. Adopting an indigenous diet encourages Native people to consider the gifts of the earth and how it provides nourishment. This session will provide information on how traditional foods are an integral part of indigenous culture in general and will look specifically at Chippewa/Cree and Navajo traditions and food. Insights and recommendations from community members for patient education and counseling will be shared.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Develop diabetes education that encourages use of traditional food ways.
2. Educate patients about aspects of traditional Native American lifestyles that may contribute to improved health and well-being.
3. Identify one change you can make in your clinical or public health practice that may help encourage or restore healthy aspects of traditional lifestyles.

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
