Summary:

This session will include a review of the historical context of the current pediatric overweight/obesity epidemic and it’s relationship to DM 2 risk. The pathophysiology of obesity in children with emphasis on multifactorial causes and consideration of the research into what works and what doesn’t in obesity interventions will be discussed. A humble approach to counseling families, which acknowledges the complexities and uncertainties around overweight/obesity vs emphasizing weight or BMI as the measure of success and focusing on encouraging healthy habits will be presented. The work of an organization at Zuni which does just that, engaging kids and adolescents in fun, culturally-appropriate activities for which improved health is an added benefit will be shared.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe current rates of pediatric overweight and obesity and recognize that increased overweight in Indian Country is part of a global trend.
2. Use humility and respect in approaching families and teens about overweight and obesity.
3. Examine pediatric obesity research in terms of the efficacy of different approaches.

Tuition Policy:

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
