This webinar is specifically developed for dental staff from IHS, tribal, and urban programs in the Oklahoma City, Bemidji, and Great Plains Areas.

Antibiotic resistance is a major public health threat, with “superbug” infections occurring in 2.8 million people in the US each year. Antibiotic misuse and overuse are the primary reasons for the development of antibiotic resistance and adverse reactions—most notably life-threatening Clostridioides difficile infection [C. Diff]. The risk/benefit of prescribing antibiotics must always be considered before prescribing any antibiotic.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1.   Describe how antibiotic resistance occurs and some of the most important antibiotic resistance issues
2.   Understand the impact that unnecessary antibiotic exposure has on patient harm including antibiotic resistance and Clostridiodes difficile infection
3.   Review guidelines for management of odontogenic infections and guidelines for antibiotic prophylaxis
4.   Identify key antibiotic stewardship issues in dentistry and provide approaches and tools that may be implemented by all dental staff

The speakers have no conflicts of interest to report. Marie T. Fluent, DDS, CDIPC. Dr. Fluent is a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Her dental career spanned 35 years and included roles as dentist, infection control coordinator, office manager, and dental assistant. She now lectures, writes, and consults extensively on infection control, OSHA compliance, eye safety, and antibiotic stewardship in dentistry. Dr. Fluent is on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Antibiotic Resistance Reduction Coalition [MARR]. In 2022 she helped OSAP secure CDC grant funding to disseminate antibiotic stewardship resources to dental personnel and led OSAP's Antibiotic Stewardship Summits. She is passionate and deeply committed to educate the dental community to be stewards of antibiotics and strive for the safest dental visit™. Dr. Elaine Bailey is the Executive Director of the Michigan Antibiotic Resistance Reduction [MARR] Coalition and has served on the MARR Advisory Council since 2000. She earned her doctorate of pharmacy degree and completed fellowship training in anti-infective pharmacotherapy at Wayne State University. She has held positions in academia, hospital pharmacy and pharmaceutical industry medical affairs, supporting the scientific development of a variety of anti-infectives. She has authored numerous scientific articles on antibiotic use and been an invited lecturer at pharmacy, medical and dental meetings. Through her work with the MARR Coalition and collaboration with OSAP, her goal is to educate dental practices and patients to be better stewards of antibiotics, in an effort to curb the public health crisis of antibiotic resistance and improve patient care.

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
