Discussion on best practices and practice improvements when screening for substance use. Review of new substance use screenings tools, The Tobacco, Alcohol, Prescription medication, and other Substance use [TAPS] Tool and CAGE-AID [CAGE adapted to include drugs], recently available for documentation in the Resource and Patient Management System [RPMS] Electronic Health Record [EHR].

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Examine the process of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment and best practices to improve screening for Substance Use Disorder.
2. Identify patients at risk using the TAPS and CAGE-AID screening tools.
3. Apply clinical documentation tools to improve patient assessments.

LCDR Sherry Daker currently serves as Acting Deputy Pharmacy Director and Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator at the Red Lake Indian Health Service Hospital. She earned her PharmD from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL in 2017. After graduation, she joined the United States Public Health Service [USPHS] and completed a PGY-1 ambulatory care pharmacy residency at Red Lake Hospital. She earned a Master of Science in Health Care Administration from Oklahoma State University in 2022. LCDR Daker currently serves on the IHS National Committee on Heroin Opioid and Pain Efforts [HOPE] as co-lead of the treatment and recovery workgroup. Wendy Wisdom, Hopi/Choctaw/Chickasaw, has worked for Indian Health Service for over 25 years. She is currently the Resource and Patient Management System [RPMS] National Clinical Application Coordinator for the RPMS Behavioral Health System with the Office of Information Technology [OIT]. She completed her BA from the University of California, Berkeley and her MSW from Arizona State University. Before joining OIT in 2011, she worked at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Ms. Wisdom has been instrumental in the development and deployment of clinical software to support the unique business processes of behavioral health providers in the Indian healthcare delivery system at the local and national levels. Dr. Geniel Harrison is the Chief Medical Officer at the Portland Area Indian Health Service. She provides clinical oversight and direction to the medical services and public health initiatives of the Portland Area Indian Health Service throughout Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. She also administers many aspects of the Area’s overall AI/AN health care programs. Prior to this position, she served as a Clinical Director at various health care facilities [Tribal and federal] since 2013. Dr. Harrison is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine who has worked with the Indian Health Service for 13 years. She is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservation located on the border of Utah and Nevada.

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
