Interceptive orthodontics is the act of addressing orthodontic problems earlier before they become more challenging to correct. Interceptive orthodontics takes advantage of growing jaws to correct issues like overbites, crossbites, misalignments, and underbites before they get out of hand. An important component of interceptive orthodontics involves the use of space maintainers to preserve the dental arch length and prevent crowding due to early loss of primary teeth. This presentation will primarily focus on the use of space maintenance in the primary and mixed dentitions, the different types of space maintainers available, indications and recommendations for use, and clinical tips for treatment planning, fabricating and delivering space maintainer appliances. This webinar will describe steps the general dentist and the entire dental team can take to address these issues in IHS, tribal, and urban dental settings in preparation for comprehensive orthodontic treatment later in a child’s life. For the dentist with little experience with interceptive orthodontics, this webinar will serve as an introduction to the fundamentals, and dentists will be encouraged to pursue further education to hone their skills in this area. For the dentist with experience in interceptive orthodontics, this webinar will serve more as a review to enhance existing skill sets.

Upon completion of this webinar, participants should be able to:
1] Explain when space maintenance is needed and the types of space maintainers.
2] Describe indications, contraindications, risks and benefits of placing a space maintainer
3] Explain the clinical steps and sequence of patient visits necessary for unilateral and bilateral fixed space maintainers

Tuition must be paid in full 8 weeks prior to the start date of any course. Request for refunds must be received in writing at least two weeks before the course begins. For each refund request, there will be an administrative charge of $100. No refunds will be made to registrants who fail to attend a course. If IHS CDE program cancels a course, then 100% of the tuition will be refunded.
