Researchers working with any kind of clinical information should also be aware of the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). A useful web-based course on this can be found at the Indian Health Service Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) webpage, under “training”. It is accessible to all customers and partners so long as you have an IHS Web Login. When appropriate, IHS IRBs will provide the HIPAA waivers necessary for a study to be conducted. In applications to the IHS IRBs, researchers should state whether their project requires a HIPAA waiver and if so, how it qualifies for one.
