As a result of the current Federal government funding situation, the information on this website may not be up to date or acted upon. Updates regarding government operating status and resumption of normal operations can be found at www.opm.gov . Despite the lapse in appropriations, IHS will continue to provide direct clinical health care services as well as referrals for contracted services that cannot be provided through IHS clinics. For more information on how IHS is impacted, visit: HHS Contingency Plan
Researchers working with any kind of clinical information should also be aware of the requirements of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Useful web-based courses on this can be found at the Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPAA/HIPS) Training modules from U. Miami (CITI provider); and at the training provided by UCLA. When appropriate, IHS IRBs will provide the HIPAA waivers necessary for a study to be conducted. In applications to the IHS IRBs, researchers should state whether their project requires a HIPAA waiver and if so, how it qualifies for one.
