Phoenix Area

Elko Service Unit

The Elko Service Unit incorporates the Wheel of Health to patient care decisions. Behavioral Health providers will utilize Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and supplement behavioral health care through tele-psychiatry and mental health counseling through telehealth. Their interventions are focused on reducing the prevalence of substance abuse and teach skills to reduce the risk of suicide.

Gila River Health Care Corporation

The Gila River Health Care Corporation uses multiple strategies to prevent suicide within their community including 1) Gatekeeper training for community members, providers, and other professionals; 2) enhanced reporting systems for screening; 3) provide support to community members through culturally appropriate interventions; and, 4) postvention support for individuals, families, and the community related to attempts and/or loss from suicide.

Hualapai Tribe – Purpose Area 2

The Hualapai Tribe supports the development and implementation of a suicide surveillance program, Finding Hope. This program is a comprehensive increase in prevention, intervention, and postvention services for individuals and families experiencing distress related to suicidal ideations, gestures, and attempts. The program seeks to increase awareness, increase services, and change behaviors in a way which will result in reduction of suicidal gestures, attempts, and completions.

Hualapai Tribe – Purpose Area 4

The Hualapai Tribe' Health Department and Cultural Department has worked with Palo Alto University to develop the "Hualapai Empowerment" program. They are developing a mentorship curriculum focused on promoting interest in genealogy, language, arts, and Hualapai traditional practices. They also use the Good Road of Life and Native H.O.P.E. evidence-based workshops to reduce the prevalence of drug use and suicidal behaviors in the community.

Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah

The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah developed the Mus-Pu-V Project, which has an eight-week curriculum to engage the general Paiute/Native American youth population in each of the Band areas in consistent prevention programming and activities. The program teaches basic life skills through interactive, evidence-, practice- and culture-based approaches. This curriculum will help to eliminate the sense of loss and despair that is attributed to the cycle of substance use and suicide.

Phoenix Indian Medical Center

The Phoenix Indian Medical Center provides evidence-based prevention, intervention, and postvention services to address suicidal ideations and behaviors. They utilize practices such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprograming (EMDR) and Seeking Safety model in decreasing suicidal ideations and behaviors.

Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Purpose Area 3

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Sumunumu Program will focus on long-term methamphetamine treatment and prevention through the use of the Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) and inpatient treatment. Access to inpatient treatment on a timely basis is provided through the New Hope Recovery Ranch and the New Frontier Treatment Center. Aftercare services will be provided through the Sumunumu Resource Center with the ability to assist clients studying for and passing the GED, job searches, and assistance programs (i.e., IGA, TANF, food stamps, etc.). Prevention efforts will be provided at the schools located on the reservation and during other community outreach activities.

Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe – Purpose Area 4

The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Sumunumu Program provides quality support and behavioral services to clients and the Pyramid Lake Paiute Community. They offer art classes, Active Parenting classes, and beading classes. The program holds events such as the “Honoring the Elder Women” and address suicide prevention by providing Safe Talk presentations in the community. The program offers Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics Anonymous 12-Step meetings and talking circles to help promote sobriety through traditional healing.

Reno-Sparks Indian Colony

The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony communities have identified methamphetamine abuse and suicide as their top areas of concern. The Behavioral Health Department enhances the services they provide to the community with direct outreach and organizational collaboration. They have created a collaborative outreach program with the medical department, diabetes and wellness program, parks and recreation, education, community members, and tribal court programs, in order to foster the sustainability of wellness and culture within children, adults, elders, families, and communities.

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community – Purpose Area 2

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community will work to improve the health and well-being of community members by increasing suicide prevention awareness. In addition to promoting the skills for the community youth, the Department of Behavioral Health Services has encouraged staff to take trauma-informed care continuing education due to awareness that a history of trauma (or ongoing stressors) can impact emotional and behavioral responses.

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community – Purpose Area 3

The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community will promote the health and well-being by utilizing Matrix Model, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Skills Training in Affect and Interpersonal Regulation (STAR), Journey to Recovery. They developed the "Faces of Recovery" testimonial video where members of the community describe their journey to recovery and use ASIST suicide prevention training. Current efforts address substance abuse, promote prevention of drug abuse, and suicide prevention for the community.

Sherman Indian School Clinic

The Sherman Indian School Clinic provides evidence-based prevention, intervention, and postvention services surrounding suicidal behavior and substance abuse among the youth in the school. The project focuses on education, evidence-based treatment methods, and structured life skills training.
