Other LRP Opportunities

There are a number of other loan repayment programs available if you do not receive an IHS LRP award but still want to take advantage of the professional and personal benefits that come with an Indian health career. These options include the IHS Supplemental Loan Repayment Program (SLRP), the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program (LRP) Exit Disclaimer: You Are Leaving www.ihs.gov , NURSE Corps LRP Exit Disclaimer: You Are Leaving www.ihs.gov  and state loan repayment programs Exit Disclaimer: You Are Leaving www.ihs.gov .

These loan repayment options are available to practitioners interested in pursuing the path to Indian health, as well as health professionals already practicing at Indian health facilities. In the event that you qualify for multiple awards, please note that federal government policy allows only one form of loan repayment to be accepted at one time.

IHS Supplemental Loan Repayment

In addition to the IHS LRP, you should also consider practicing at specific IHS sites in conjunction with the IHS Supplemental Loan Repayment Program, which offers comparable loan repayment awards for health professionals who fill vacancies in IHS areas in need of health care professionals for a minimum two-year service commitment to practice at that facility. Contact the IHS LRP branch office for more information about the IHS SLRP.

National Health Service Corps

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) offers loan repayment support to qualified health care professionals dedicated to practicing in medically underserved areas. NHSC Loan Repayment Program (LRP) participants also earn competitive salaries from their site and other benefits in addition to loan repayment. The NHSC LRP offers an initial award of up to $50,000 for two years of full-time service when you select a service site with a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) score of 14 or higher and up to $30,000 for sites with a score of 13 and below. Half-time service options are also available.
