Models for Improving Care

Through the Improving Patient Care (IPC) program, we are learning together how to build the kind of care system that American Indian and Alaska Native people deserve. We are demonstrating progress and seeing results by using quality improvement (QI) models developed by IPC teams and experts in health care quality improvement.

  • The IHS Care Model is based on the PCMH model of care.
  • The program's new IPC Change Package is a step-by-step guide to transforming primary care delivery within IHS. The sequenced approach ensures the development of initial capabilities, laying the groundwork for later steps of implementation.
  • Finally, a new Model for Improvement incorporates an established process to test and implement changes in real work settings. Known as the PDSA cycle (Plan-Do-Study-Act), this process guides the evaluation of a change to determine if it results in improvement.
